The Mara is a rodent which looks like a small deer with long ears , and they come from the plains and scrub land of Argentina , males and females form long-term bonds , however groups of Mara bond together to form creches to rear their young. They grow up to about 75cm long and can weigh up to 9kg . They can live up to 15 years .We keep our Mara in the deer pen ‘The park’ where they are with the fallow and red deer , the wallabies , peacocks, pheasants and rhea. They are quite tame and come down to feed with the rest of the livestock . They use low grumbles to keep in contact with their mate and a whistling call to contact their young . Here at the farm they keep the youngsters in burrows , the young come out once or twice a day and then they disappear back in the burrow after some bathing in the day light .
